ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the prevalence of obesity among primary and middle school students in Taizhou, and provide scientific evidence for prevention and control. Methods A primary school, a middle school and a high school were randomly selected from each of 9 counties(cities or districts)in Taizhou using stratified sampling. We collected data on height, weight and age to calculate body mass index(BMI)and evaluated it according to the Appendix A of Technical Specification for Student Health Examination(GB/T 26343-2010)"Screening Standards for Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents". Descriptive statistics of obesity was conducted. Results The prevalence of obesity among primary, middle, and high school students in Taizhou was 8.08%. It was higher among boys(10.80%)than girls(5.08%)(P < 0.05). The trend of obesity significantly decreased among students in different schools was as follows:primary school > middle school > high schoolt(χboy2 = 259.309, P < 0.001; χgirl2 = 244.679, P < 0.001), regardless of sex. Conclusion Obesity among primary, middle, and high school students in Taizhou remains high, with an increasing trend in recent years. The targeted population for prevention and control is 7-12-year-old primary school students, especially boys.

ABSTRACT

Objetivos: Realizar revisão integrativa da literatura e descrever as possíveis alterações no estilo de vida e saúde de professores nos níveis ensino fundamental, médio, superior. Realizou-se busca nas bases de Literatura Latina-Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), identificados por meio da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), no período de 2010 a 2014. Utilizou-se os descritores: Saúde, Trabalho, Docentes, Professor, Ensino fundamental e médio, Estilo de vida, Saúde ocupacional. Foram encontrados 98 artigos, entretanto, apenas 22 foram elegíveis para a pesquisa. Os resultados mostrados apresentam as principais alterações de saúde da classe profissional de professores, os artigos estudados agruparam e correlacionaram conhecimentos com o atual estilo de vida e qualidade dos mesmos...

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the status of myopia in students from different kinds of schools in Shantou city, China. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 2 418 students from 4 middle and high schools in Shantou were surveyed through randomized cluster sampling. Ophthalmic examination and auto-refraction were performed for all subjects. RESULTS: Among all 2 394 students examined. The myopia rates for students from middle and high school were 48. 07% and 68. 28%. In normal middle school, students from rural area had lower rate of myopia than students from the urban area (χ2 = 13. 879, P CONCLUSION:The prevalence of myopia in the middle school of urban area in Shantou was higher than rural area. The increasing rate of myopia in youngsters is correlated with study stress. In order to decrease the myopia rate, it is extremely important to improve study environment in students.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to eating breakfast for middle and high school students in Seoul using the Theory of Planned Behavior. Out of 2,280 questionnaires distributed to 22 schools, 2,060 were returned (90.4% response rate) and 1,899 were analyzed (83.3% analysis rate). Gender, self-perceived household income level and mother's working status were examined as demographic factors. "Attitude", "Subjective norm", "Perceived difficulty in access to breakfast", "Perceived time restriction" and "Self restriction to breakfast" were extracted as psychosocial factors as the results of factor analysis and reliability test using 17 items. In case of middle school students, boys were more likely to skip breakfast than girls. The students perceiving their household income level "low or middle low" were more likely to skip breakfast than those who perceived their household income level "high or middle high". The students whose mother had a job tended to skip breakfast than those whose mother had no job. In case of high school students, the students perceiving their household income level "low or middle low" tended to skip breakfast than those perceiving their household income level "high or middle high". The results of analysis of variance, all the psychosocial factors examined in this study-"Attitude", "Subjective norm", "Perceived difficulty in access to breakfast", "Perceived time restriction" and "Self restriction to breakfast"- were related to the frequencies of eating breakfast during weekdays in both the middle and high school students.

ABSTRACT

Since 2003, researchers, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from the State University of Maringá have been working alongside teachers from the state and local schools in the municipality of Porto Rico (Paraná State), located on the banks of the Paraná River. Their objective is to outline actions and strategies with the purpose of building methodological paths to insert environmental education into the school curriculum. Based on the action-research methodology, the group has developed the following programs: a) the Continuing Education Program in Environmental Education; b) the Development of Interdisciplinary Projects; c) the Insertion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs); and d) the Production of Teaching Materials. The evaluations of the programs indicate that teachers have been able to gradually build a theoretical and methodological basis for environmental education while simultaneously growing into the role of teacher-researchers as they create the conditions to investigate their pedagogical practices, reflect upon them, share experiences, innovate, and make the teaching-learning process more significant. Allied to the advances in educational practices and with the aid of ICTs, the activities developed in the classroom, in the field and in the lab - all of which involve natural and cultural aspects of the region - have contributed to teachers' and students' better understanding of the ecological, cultural, social and economic value of the floodplain, and consequently, of the importance of preservation and management in order to maintain local biodiversity.


Desde 2003, pesquisadores, professores, pós-graduandos e graduandos da Universidade Estadual de Maringá vêm trabalhando em conjunto com os professores das escolas, estadual e municipal, do município de Porto Rico - PR, localizado às margens do Rio Paraná, com o objetivo de delinear ações e estratégias, no sentido de construir caminhos metodológicos para a inserção da educação ambiental no currículo escolar. ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the sanitary performance and education of middle and high school foodservice employees in Seoul, South Korea in order to ensure the foodservice safety and identify why some employees cannot apply learned knowledge in real work situations. Subjects consisted of 217 school foodservice employees who attended a regular sanitary education program under the auspices of the Seoul Gangdong and Gangseo district offices. The sanitary performance was assessed with 5 dimensions (personal hygiene, ingredient control, process control, safety management and sanitary education), and was self-evaluated using a Likert 5 point scale. The data were analyzed using the SPSSWIN Version 12.0 package. The main results of the study showed that according to the general characteristics of middle and high school foodservice employees, 98.2% of respondents were women, and 64.1% of them aged 40-49. A total mean score of 5 items of sanitary performance for middle and high school employees was 4.74. Ingredient control field score was 4.83, process control 4.80 and personal hygiene 4.74. In contrast, the sanitary education field score was 4.56, significantly lower than the total mean score. Safety management field score was 4.71. Verbal education was the main method performed as a sanitary education in schools.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine factors affecting intention to participate in school breakfast programs of middle and high school students in Seoul using the Theory of Planned Behavior. Out of 2,280 questionnaires distributed to the middle and high school students, 2,060 were returned (90.4% response rate) and 1,799 were analyzed (78.9% analysis rate). To determine factors affecting intention to participate in school breakfast programs, logistic regression analyses were conducted for middle and high school students, respectively. For logistic regression, data of 1,217 out of 1,799 students (637 middle and 580 high school students) were used after excluding 582 students which had an answer 'Not sure' to the question about intention to participate in school breakfast programs. In case of middle school students, male than female students (OR = 1.504), the students who skipped all breakfast (OR = 1.851), who ate breakfast 1~2 times (OR = 3.474) or 3~4 times (OR = 1.950) than those who ate breakfast everyday during weekdays of the previous week were more likely to participate in school breakfast programs. In case of high school students, male than female (OR = 1.967), the students who skipped all breakfast (OR = 4.187), the students who ate breakfast 1~2 times (OR = 3.024) or 3~4 times (OR = 2.095) than those who ate breakfast everyday during weekdays of the previous week were more likely to participate in school breakfast programs. In addition, both possibility of middle and high school students' participation in school breakfast programs increased as the satisfaction with school lunch service (OR = 1.704, 1.653) increased. Middle school students who perceived their household income level 'low or middle low' (OR = 1.999) than those who perceived their household income level 'middle' and the students who had more positive 'attitude' (OR = 1.311) toward eating breakfast were more likely to participate in school breakfast programs. However, high school students who had higher 'perceived difficulty in access to breakfast' (OR = 1.370) were more likely to participate in school breakfast programs. The results of this study could be useful data to plan and develop school breakfast programs in Korea.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess students' preference on set menus served in school foodservice. Questionnaires were distributed to 4,050 students enrolled in 34 middle and high schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongnam provinces. The students were asked to assess their preferences on 78 set menus using a 5-point Likert-type scale(1 : very dislike - 5 : very like). Excluding responses with significant missing data, usable responses were 3,433. Data were analyzed with descriptive analysis, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance. There was no difference between middle and high school students in terms of set menu preferences. On the other hand, there was significant difference between boys' and girls' set menu preferences. Among the seven given set menu groups(rice and soup with side dishes, tangs, rice with toppings, fried rice, western foods, noodles . ddeokguk . dumpling soups, and bibimbaps), boys had higher preference scores for the rice and soup with side dishes, tangs, rice with toppings, and fried rice than that of girls. Fried rice set menus were chosen to be boys' favorite menus while western food set menus were most preferred by the girls. Rice and soup with side dishes set menus were least preferred by both boys and girls.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to investigate the preference and consumption pattern on milk and milk products of middle and high school students. The subjects were 1,195 students(590 middle school and 605 high school students) living in Geochang area. The survey was conducted by using a self-administered questionnaire in November, 2004. The results were as follows. Sixty-three point four percent of the subjects liked milk, and the main reason was 'accelerate growth and development'(55.4%). Preferred tastes of milk were 'savory taste'(35.4%) and 'sweet taste' (29.9%). Banana milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, ice cream, yoplait and yogurt were highly preferred. General preference for different kinds of milk was significantly higher in high school students and male students than in middle school students and female ones. With regard to preference for dairy products, cream (p<0.01) and butter(p<0.05) was preferred more by male students than by female ones, ice cream(p<0.05), yoplait (p<0.05) more by female students than male ones. The score of milk intake frequency was 3.84(3~4 times a week) out of 5 points(7 times a week) for white milk, and that of chocolate milk was 1.98, banana milk 1.96, strawberry milk 1.72, coffee milk 1.65, showing that these products were drank less then once a week. In addition, the white milk intake frequency was significantly higher in middle school students and male students than in high school students and female students(p<0.001). Preference for milk showed a positive correlation with preference for dairy products (r=0.543, P<0.001) and frequency of milk intake(r=0.429, P<0.001). This suggests that those who prefer milk high tend to prefer dairy products and to show high milk intake frequency. In addition, milk intake frequency was in a high positive correlation with dairy product intake frequency(r=0.648, P<0.001).

ABSTRACT

Efficient financial management is a critical factor in achieving school foodservice goals. The objective of this study was to suggest efficient financial management practices in secondary school foodservices. In pursuit of this objective, we first identified performance indexes for measuring the success of financial management. Second, we suggested financial management standards, financial data classification methods and a report system. Last, we analyzed operating ratios with the financial data of self-operated and contract-managed school food services. The data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire from 10 middle/high school foodservices in Seoul and Kyeonggi Provincial during on-sites visits and interviews with dieticians and managers. Student participation, sales goals, re-contract frequency and number and cost of disaster loss were identified as the performance indexes for financial management. Income statements were compiled by identifying and classifying financial data. Total revenues consisted of subsidies, meal sales, other revenue and interest. Expenditures consisted of purchased food, salaries and wages, utility costs, office supplies, kitchen supplies, purchased services, company overhead indirect costs, facility investment and maintenance, facility usage expenses, employee benefits and miscellaneous. Mean price of a meal was 2,326 won at self-operated foodservices when the subsidies were included as revenues and 2,360 won at contract-managed foodservices. When including the subsidies as revenues, the operating ratios of self-operated foodservice showed that the food cost percentage was 66.9%, labor cost 23.2%, operation cost 9.9% and profit 0%. The correspond figures at contract-managed foodservices were 57.6%, 21.5%, 15.3%, and 5.5%, respectively. Food costs in self-operated foodservices was significantly higher than that for contract-managed foodservices, however, facility investment and maintenance and facility usage expenses at self-operated foodservices was significantly lower than those for contract-managed foodservices. Based on this study, the methodology and classification system of financial data was found to be applicable to assess the financial structure of school foodservices.
